A Rare Pair of 16th Century Oak Ecclesiastical Portrait Panels
Clearly depicting Jesus’s face below a curved halo, looking across to a female face – probably Mary Magdalene. Each face set within a clearly defined roundel, with oak leaves to the top corners and supported on Renaissance-type scrolls.
These panels would have formed part of a piece of furniture – possibly the back of an armchair, which would have been made for use in an ecclesiastical setting.
(Shown with a 15th century polychrome figure).
Flemish/French circa 1450-1500.
Height 15.5 inches, width 12 inches.
